I Never Asked You to Keep Yourself Saved
An intimate Living Letter about salvation, assurance, and the beautiful purpose of good works.
What if the greatest misunderstanding about salvation isn't how we receive it, but who we believe is responsible for keeping it?
We have been told to believe, to trust, to surrender. Yet somewhere along the journey, many of us quietly inherited another responsibility: keeping ourselves saved.
And beneath the weight of that responsibility, a question begins to whisper: What if I fail?
But what if the answer has been speaking to us all along?
Beloved,
Did you think I would give My life to save you, only to leave you with the burden of keeping yourself saved?
I did not purchase you with My blood and then place your eternity in the trembling hands of your own perfection.
I called you Mine.
And perhaps that is where we have misunderstood salvation.
We know that we are saved by grace through faith, not by our own works. Yet somehow, after receiving this extraordinary gift, we begin to live as though maintaining it depends entirely on our performance.
But Scripture tells a different story.
“For by grace you have been saved through faith ... not a result of works.” (Eph 2:8–9)
And Jesus Himself declared:
“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of My hand.” (John 10:27–28, ESV)
Notice whose hand is holding whom.
Perhaps the question was never whether His hands were strong enough to hold us. Perhaps the question was why we ever imagined that our hands were the ones holding Him.
Nothing Shall Separate Us

There is a breathtaking declaration in Romans 8:38–39.
Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor anything else in all creation can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus.
Not even the uncertainties of tomorrow.
Beloved,
You are worried about losing what you could never have earned.
Did I not tell you that no one can snatch My sheep from My hand? Did I not promise that whoever comes to Me, I will never cast out?
And now you wonder whether death, life, angels, powers, or even the uncertainties of tomorrow could separate you from My love?
Listen to what has already been declared concerning you.
Nothing in all creation can separate you from the love of God that is in Me.
These words invite us to rest in the faithfulness of Christ rather than the perfection of our own performance.
But what about those who performed miracles in His name, only to hear Him say, “I never knew you”?
Notice what Jesus did not say.
He did not say, I once knew you, but then I stopped.
He said, “I never knew you.” (Matt 7:23)
It is a sobering reminder that religious activity is not the same as a genuine relationship with Christ. Miracles, impressive accomplishments, and outward appearances cannot replace knowing Him.
So Why Do Good Works Matter?
Because grace does not leave us without purpose.
Ephesians 2 does not end by telling us that salvation is not earned through works. It continues by declaring that we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works (Eph 2:10).
And Peter tells us why.
We are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's own people, called to proclaim the excellencies of the One who brought us out of darkness into His marvelous light (1 Pet 2:9).
How beautiful is that?
We have not been called to earn His acceptance through our goodness.
We have been called to make His goodness visible.
Beloved,
When you love the overlooked, show kindness to the weary, forgive the undeserving, and give generously to those in need, you are not trying to earn a place in My heart.
You are revealing the One who already lives in yours.
And suddenly, good works take on an entirely different meaning.
They are no longer a desperate attempt to remain accepted. They become expressions of the life we have received.
Our kindness becomes a glimpse of His kindness. Our generosity becomes an expression of His generosity. Our love becomes a testimony of the One who first loved us.
We do not perform good works to remain His. We do good works because we are His.
A Living Letter to Carry With You
You were never called to spend your life proving that you deserve to be saved. You were called to spend your life revealing the Savior who saved you.
So love generously. Forgive freely. Be kind when kindness is costly. Let the world encounter His goodness through you.
Not because you are trying to become His.
But because, in Christ, you already are.
With love,
